Richton, MS (February 25, 2022) – One person was killed and a child was injured in a fatal car accident in Richton on Thursday morning, February 24.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the accident happened on MS-15 in the northbound lanes of traffic. A Richton resident was traveling north in a Toyota Corolla when their vehicle struck a Ford Edge driven by 73-year-old Bobbie Cowart due to reasons that are not yet known. The vehicles involved in the accident were badly damaged as a result.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were called to the scene to help those in need. Cowart was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries. The two-year-old child in her vehicle sustained minor injuries. It is not known if the other driver was hurt.
The roadway was blocked in several lanes of traffic for a period of time. Police quickly worked to clear the scene.
No further details have been released. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues.
