Mendenhall, MS (April 6, 2022) – A child was killed in a fatal bicycle crash involving a tractor-trailer in Mendenhall on Tuesday night, April 5.
According to Mississippi Highway Patrol officials, the accident happened around 9 p.m. on MS-49 around the area of New Hope Road. Police confirmed that a 1998 tractor-trailer was headed south in the area when it struck a bicyclist who was in the right lane. It was determined that the bicycle was being operated by a 6th grader.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help. The child, identified only as a 12-year-old who attended Magee Middle School, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer remained on the scene but was not injured.
Due to the severity of the accident, the roadway was blocked in several lanes for some time. Police quickly worked to clear the scene.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues. Police will update with any new information as it is available.
