Hickory Flat, MS (April 12, 2022) – On Tuesday morning, April 12, a man was killed in a fatal truck accident that took place on a major highway in Hickory Flat.
According to Union County officials, the accident happened on I-22 where the County Road 2 overpass crosses over the Interstate at 8 a.m. An 18-wheeler was traveling in the area carrying liquified oxygen. At the same time, 42-year-old Benjamin King was traveling behind it in his passenger vehicle. The vehicles collided with each other near the overpass due to reasons that are not yet known.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other local responders were immediately called to the scene to help those in need. King, who was the only person in the passenger vehicle, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt but remained at the scene.
The roadway was blocked in the area of County Road 2 for an extended period of time as police worked to clear the scene.
No further details have been released but the investigation into the accident remains ongoing.
