Carthage, MS (April 22, 2022) – One person was seriously injured in a school bus accident that took place on a major roadway in Carthage on Friday afternoon, April 22.
According to Leake County deputies, the accident happened around 3:33 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of MS-16 around the area of the Lobutcha Bridge. A school bus was making a stop at a residence in the area when a pickup was unable to stop in time, causing the truck to rear-end the back of the bus. The accident led to extensive damages in the pickup truck.
Several local responders, including Carthage Fire Department crews and Emergency Medical Services, were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. The driver of the pickup truck was trapped in their vehicle and had to be extricated by fire crews. The driver was rushed to the hospital by medical helicopter for treatment of critical injuries. No children on the bus sustained injuries in the accident.
Due to the severity of the collision, the roadway was blocked in the area for an extended period of time.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues at this time. Police will update with more information as it is available.
