Gulfport, MS (May 4, 2022) – One person was injured but is expected to be okay following a train accident in Gulfport on Wednesday afternoon, May 4.
Gulfport Police confirmed that the accident happened on the train tracks where MS-49 crosses near the area of Creosote Road and the Gulfport Premium Outlets. A dark silver sedan was traveling in the area when the driver started to cross the train tracks. A train was unable to stop in time as it passed through and slammed into the side of the passenger vehicle before it came to a complete stop.
Several local responders, including paramedics and fire crews, were called to the scene to help. A family was in the sedan, including two adults and their toddler child. The driver received on-scene medical attention for a sore neck. It is not known if any other injuries were present.
Due to the force of the accident, the vehicle was pushed along the tracks for a short period of time. The train operator told police that he almost struck another vehicle that was close to the railroad tracks when passing through as well.
Traffic on the road was blocked in the area for an extended period of time.
