Mississippi Auto Collisions
In 2020, the year with the most recent crash data recorded in Mississippi, the highest crash rate per 100,000 individuals occurred. Mississippi was near the top of the list of states across the nation, with more than 25 out of 100,000 individuals losing their lives in fatal accidents. The national average sits at around 11.4/100,000, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is equivalent to 687 collisions that caused 752 fatalities in 2020. There were also two fatalities per every 100 million miles traveled, compared to the state that ranked the lowest, which saw less than one death per the same number of miles driven.
Unfortunately, these numbers only continue to grow by the year. Severe crash injuries jumped from 633 in 2014 to over 1,600 in 2019. When anyone gets behind the wheel of a vehicle and behaves in a careless, reckless, or otherwise negligent manner, they risk their own lives and the lives of everyone around them. Some of the main causes of auto collisions in the state of Mississippi include:
- Speeding
- Impaired driving (alcohol, prescription drugs, illegal drugs, marijuana)
- Reckless driving
- Distracted driving
- Cell phone use
- Running stop signs
- Red lights
- Fatigued driving
- Wrong-way driving
- Aggressive driving
- Violating traffic laws
- Inexperienced driving
For instance, speeding only increases the chances of an accident happening, and greatly decreases a driver’s ability to safely react in the case that one does occur. The severity of a collision is also increased by speeding. In the past twenty years, speed has contributed to roughly one-third of all crash deaths in the US, according to the NHTSA.
When you or a loved one has suffered injuries in an accident caused by a driver who was speeding, intoxicated, or distracted, it is vital to determine how the incident took place so you can be compensated for your losses and damages. No one should ever have to pay for being hurt by the negligent actions of another person.
