Collins, MS (January 21, 2022) – A woman was killed in a fatal car accident that took place on a major highway in Collins on Thursday night, January 20.
Mississippi Highway Patrol officials confirmed that the accident happened around 5:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of US-84. Police confirmed that 28-year-old Chaniquel Hathorn was driving her 2007 Ford Fusion in the area when her vehicle suddenly collided with a Kia Rio that was attempting to cross the highway. The accident caused extensive damages to both vehicles.
Numerous responders, including paramedics and fire crews, were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. Hathorn was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries. The other driver sustained minor injuries and is expected to be okay.
Due to the severity of the accident, a large portion of the roadway was blocked in the area for a period of time. Police quickly worked to clear the scene.
Mississippi Highway Patrol continues its investigation into the accident. They will update as more information is available.
