Mississippi Auto Collisions
In 2020, the most recent year with accident data recorded for the state of Mississippi, the state saw the highest traffic accident fatality rate per 100,000 individuals. Mississippi was at the top of the list of states throughout the country, with over 25/100,000 people. This is compared to the national average of 11.4/100,000, according to information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is equal to 687 accidents that resulted in 752 deaths in 2020. Mississippi also saw two deaths for every 100 million miles driven, compared to the lowest-ranking state, which saw .63 deaths per the same number of miles traveled.
The harsh reality is that these numbers only continue to grow each year. Serious crash injuries rose from 633 in 2014 to 1,618 in 2019. Whenever someone decides to operate their vehicle in an irresponsible, reckless, or otherwise dangerous manner, they put themselves and everyone around them at risk for serious injuries or even death. Some of the top reasons people lose their lives in Mississippi car crashes include:
- Speeding
- Impaired driving (alcohol, prescription drugs, illegal drugs, marijuana)
- Reckless driving
- Distracted driving
- Cell phone use
- Running stop signs
- Red lights
- Fatigued driving
- Wrong-way driving
- Aggressive driving
- Violating traffic laws
- Inexperienced driving
For example, when it comes to speeding, driving too fast only increases the chance of a crash occurring. It also increases the severity of an accident if it happens. For over the past two decades, speed has been a contributing factor in roughly ⅓ of all auto accident deaths, according to information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
