Mississippi Vehicle Wrecks
Car wrecks in Mississippi are unfortunately rather common. According to information provided by statistics, more than 125,000 collisions happen per year in the Magnolia State. Approximately 54,000 people sustain serious injuries in these wrecks every single year, and more than 1,000 are killed.
Traffic collisions are a serious problem in the United States. Unfortunately, this is mostly due to the negligent actions of motorists. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association reports that approximately 96% of vehicle wrecks are caused by driver error/negligence. Driver negligence is defined as any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from the roadway when they’re operating a vehicle.
Driver distraction, an extremely common type of negligent driving, ends the lives of approximately 3,000 people per year in the United States. Smartphones have greatly increased the risk of becoming involved in an accident with a distracted driver. Even though it seems harmless to look at your phone while you’re driving, it definitely isn’t. Reading a text for five seconds while going 55 miles per hour is the equivalent of driving the length of an entire football field with a blindfold on. Anyone and everyone you encounter in that five seconds is at risk for serious injuries or even death. When you think about it this way, is it really worth it to read a text and risk lives, including your own?
If you or someone you love has recently been injured in a traffic collision caused by negligent driving, you need to contact an attorney. It is against the law to drive negligently, and those who choose to do so and cause serious accidents need to be held accountable. Negligent driving is punishable by hefty fines and, depending on the circumstances, jail time.
The injured victims of negligent drivers are eligible to collect financial compensation for their damages. However, if they attempt to collect this compensation without the help of an attorney, they may get short-changed. A skilled car accident lawyer in Oxford will be able to help you get the maximum compensation available for your injuries and losses.
