Mississippi Pedestrian Accidents

Yazoo County, MS - Pedestrian Killed in Accident on Hwy 16 near Vaughn RdPedestrian accidents frequently happen in the United States. In 2019, there were over 6,200 pedestrian collisions reported throughout the country, according to information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is an average of around 17 fatalities per day. Many factors can contribute to pedestrian collisions, including location, time of day, time of year, and more.

Unfortunately, most pedestrian crashes are caused by the actions of negligent drivers. Driver negligence is a major cause of road accidents in the United States. Some common examples of negligent driving include:

  • Distraction: Any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from the road and their immediate surroundings is considered a distraction. Today, drivers have more reasons to be distracted than ever, especially with the heavy use of smartphones and other hand-held technology.
  • Speeding: Traveling at unsafe speeds is, unfortunately, extremely common in the US and throughout the state of Mississippi. When drivers travel over the speed limit, they decrease their ability to react in dangerous situations, which could result in severe injuries or even death.
  • Intoxicated driving: Any time a person indulges in drugs and/or alcohol and then gets behind the wheel, they are considered an intoxicated driver, which is against the law, and extremely selfish and dangerous.
  • Fatigued driving: driving while over-tired or even just drowsy can prove to be extremely hazardous and lead to accidents.
