Columbus, MS (August 1, 2023) – The driver accused of causing a deadly accident in downtown Columbus has been charged with murder. On Monday, July 31, officials announced that the Mississippi Highway Patrol arrested Tristan Atkinson, 22, who fled from a state trooper on Wednesday, July 26, causing a fatal crash.
Ryan Koehn, 26, lost his life in the collision that occurred on Highway 182 at around 9:00 p.m. on July 26. The fatal wreck happened shortly after troopers attempted to pull over Atkinson who was driving down the highway in a 2024 GMC Sierra at illegal speeds.
Atkinson failed to comply with the traffic stop and led officers on a high-speed chase. He then collided with Koehn who was operating a 2012 Ford F-150 while traveling south on Fifth Street.
Koehn was airlifted from the scene to the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo where he later lost his life.
