Mississippi Motorcycle Accidents

DeSoto County, MS - Motorcyclist Killed in Traffic Accident on Highway 305Motorcycle accidents are some of the most devastating traffic accidents that can happen. This is mostly due to the fact that motorcyclists are the most vulnerable travelers on the roadway next to pedestrians. Motorcyclists often travel at high speeds while exposed to the open road and the elements, which could place them at a greater risk of serious injury or death than anyone else.

Information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that nearly 5,000 motorcyclists lose their lives in traffic accidents every year in the United States. Over half of motorcycle collisions end in serious injuries or fatalities for motorcyclists. In Mississippi, over 1,000 motorcycle collisions are reported per year. Some of the most common contributors to these accidents include:

  • Speeding: speeding is a dangerous activity that can increase the likelihood of sustaining life-threatening injuries if a traffic accident occurs.
  • Intoxication: Driver intoxication is responsible for approximately a quarter of all motorcycle accidents every year.
  • Distraction: Those who choose to operate their vehicles while paying attention to anything other than the roadway pose a significant threat to motorcyclists.

Driver negligence has become a prevalent problem in the United States and throughout the state of Mississippi in the past decade. More than 92% of reported car crashes are caused by the actions of negligent drivers. In Mississippi, the main reasons for car accidents are intoxication and speeding, which are two leading types of driver negligence throughout the country.
