Leake County, MS – Two-Car Crash Takes Life of Zackery Holmes on Hwy 16

Leake County, MS (August 30, 2023) – A man from Philadelphia lost his life in a two-car accident that occurred on Friday, August 25, in Leake County. He was identified as Zackery Holmes, 27.

A spokesperson from the Mississippi Highway Patrol said that at around 12:46 a.m., the incident took place when a 2009 Ford F-150 operated by Harla Oliphant, 52, of Carthage, was traveling east on Highway 16 when it was involved in a crash with a 1999 Polaris 500 near Edinburg.

The Polaris was operated by Mason Cranfill, 21, of Philadelphia. Holmes was the passenger present in Cranfill’s vehicle.

The roadway was blocked for an extended period of time while crews worked to secure the scene. Local motorists were forced to use different routes during that time, causing significant traffic delays nearby.

We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

Mississippi Car Crashes

Leake County, MS - Two-Car Crash Takes Life of Zackery Holmes on Hwy 16

In Mississippi, people are regularly involved in collisions due to driver negligence. In fact, negligent driving is behind over 92% of reported auto crashes statewide every year. Some of the most common causes of auto collisions seen in the US include:

Inebriation: When motorists drive while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol, they are more likely to cause accidents due to losing control of their vehicle. Consequently, drunk and high driving crashes continue to happen throughout the country at an alarming rate.

Distractions: Given the rise in the number of individuals using their smartphones or messing with the radio while driving, there has been a notable increase in the number of people causing crashes due to distraction. Drivers who are not paying attention to the road in front of them are more likely to cause accidents that end in injuries or even death.

Speeding: Driving over the posted speed limit is a top cause of auto collisions throughout the country. Drivers who travel at unsafe speeds, especially in bad weather, are responsible for severe collisions every single day.

Although this list is not all-inclusive, these and other types of negligence continue to cause individuals to sustain injuries or even lose their lives each day in Mississippi and across the US.
